Layer 2 and Layer 3 Software Architect
Location: Bangalore, Onsite
Introduction
In the modern networking ecosystem, the roles of Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) and Layer 3
(Network Layer) Software Architects are critical for designing robust, scalable, and secure
communication infrastructures. These professionals are responsible for conceptualising,
developing, and optimising software solutions that operate at the heart of network
communication, ensuring seamless data transfer within and across networks.
Understanding Layer 2 and Layer 3
Layer 2 (Data Link Layer): Handles node-to-node data transfer, error detection and
correction, and manages MAC addressing. Examples include Ethernet, VLANs, and
protocols like PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol).
Layer 3 (Network Layer): Responsible for routing packets across different networks,
logical addressing (IP addresses), and path determination. Protocols include IPv4,
IPv6, OSPF, and BGP.
Key Responsibilities of a Layer 2/Layer 3 Software Architect
Architectural Design:
Design high-performance Layer 2 and Layer 3 software modules for
switches, routers, and network appliances.
Define architectural patterns and frameworks for scalable and maintainable
networking software.
Protocol Implementation:
Develop and optimise implementations of Layer 2 protocols (e.g., Spanning
Tree Protocol, VLAN, LACP) and Layer 3 protocols (IPv4, IPv6, OSPF, BGP,
RIP, static routing).
Ensure interoperability with industry standards and multi-vendor environments.
Performance Optimisation:
Profile and enhance software for throughput, latency, and resource efficiency.
Utilise hardware offload capabilities (such as ASICs and FPGAs) where
appropriate.
Security and Reliability:
Incorporate robust security mechanisms, including access control,
encryption, and intrusion detection at Layer 2/3.
Design for high availability, redundancy, and fault tolerance.
Collaboration and Leadership:
Work closely with hardware engineers, QA teams, and product managers.
Mentor junior developers and lead code reviews.
Documentation and Standards:
Produce detailed design documents, API specifications, and user guides.
Stay updated with evolving networking standards (IEEE, IETF, etc.).
